Celebrate Chinese New Year with free events in Tunbridge Wells

A free family fun day will be held on Saturday 24 January in the centre of Royal Tunbridge Wells to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

A range of events have been organised by the Tunbridge Wells Arts Partnership. From 11am to 4pm in Tunbridge Wells Museum, Art Gallery and Library, visitors will be able to take part in many special activities such as a hunt for hidden dragons.

The fun drop-in activities on offer include:

  • making mini Chinese lanterns
  • hunting for the dragons hidden around the building
  • creating fiery dragon banners to parade

The multicultural arts activities during the day will be followed by a lantern parade organised by Town & Country Foundation. It will set off from Monson Way through the town to Trinity Theatre led by the samba band Bloco Fogo, and will include two colourful Chinese dragons.

Chinese treats at the Trinity Theatre from 5.30pm will include a short community presentation followed by performances of traditional dance and martial arts by The London Chinese Acrobats.

The finale to the day will be a spectacular fire sculpture in the grounds of Trinity by The World Famous.

The events are organised and funded by the Tunbridge Wells Arts Partnership, which includes Tunbridge Wells Borough Council, Kent County Council, Town & Country Foundation and Trinity Theatre.

Chinese New Year this year is on Monday 26 January. It will be the Year of the Ox.
