Zipaway Kite

School holidays can be expensive, but they don’t need to be, and there’s always plenty you can do for free or at very little cost.

Visit a lido (outdoor pool)

With the weather warming up, make the most of the sun by going for a dip in one of Kent’s famous lidos.

Set a reading challenge

All ages can join in with this and your local library will have something suitable for everyone. Quite often an overlooked resource, the library offers more than just books to borrow. You can also gain free access to computers and the internet, hire out DVDs and even ebooks. To find out more, visit Kent Libraries.

Indoor activities

It’s not always possible to go out and children can get bored easily. Try getting creative at home – here are just a few suggestions:

  • Dig out the old board games and puzzles
  • Get family and friends moving with an afternoon disco, followed by some healthy mocktails.
  • If you haven’t done it before, making your own pizza from scratch is easier than you think and tastes better than any shop-bought one.

Find a nature trail and go on a bug hunt

Looking for inspiration? The Woodland Trust Nature Detectives has a whole range of activity suggestions for outdoor and indoor fun with nature for free. You can also find a wood near you to visit. You may need a small amount of change for parking and possibly a treat!

Get 2 for 1 with Southeastern and Stagecoach

If you’re looking for a day out, Visit Kent have teamed up with the county’s top attractions and main transport operators to offer 2 for 1 deals on days out this summer.

Get to the park

Arrange a get-together with friends at the park, take a picnic, some outdoor games and perhaps fly a kite.

Help with childcare costs

If, like many, you have to work over the holidays, make sure you know what help you can get with childcare costs.

If you do find yourself struggling financially due to additional childcare costs and losing out on breakfast clubs and free school meals, please speak to your income manager who will be able to help and signpost you to services.
