Make sure you’re set up ready to make a Universal Credit claim
We recognise that this is an unprecedented time and many of us are facing a situation which we have never faced before. Understanding Universal Credit and what benefits you are entitled to can be very confusing, especially if this is new to you.
See below a full check list of what you will need to make your Universal Credit claim. We can also support you with questions over the phone.
Setting up your Universal Credit account you will need the following:
- An accessible email address that you can log into. If claiming with your partner you will need separate emails
e.g. firstname.lastname@example.org / email@example.com
- You will need to create a username, password and will be asked to provide an answer to a secret question. This is used as an added layer of security e.g. Username: johnsmith Password: tonbridge60 First pet: snoopy.
For joint applications the main claimant will be sent a code to link the accounts. This means your individual accounts will be linked together, but you will have separate verification calls.
To make your claim you will need to provide the following information:
- A telephone number that you can be contacted on. This can be a mobile or landline.
- Your postcode
- Amount of rent and service charge you pay. (If you’re unsure you can view your rent account in MyHomeOnline)
- Your landlord’s details. If we’re your landlord, here are our details: Town & Country Housing, Monson House, Monson Way, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, TN1 1LQ. Telephone 01892 501480, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
- Details of people who live with you, including dependants and lodgers.
- Employment details for you and your partner.
- Details of any savings, investments and capital (as this will have a relevance to the claim)
- Details of any benefits you currently receive
- Any health issues preventing you from working
- Bank account details – sort code and account number
- You will need two forms of identification such as Passport/ driving licence/ debit card / utility bill (a full list will be shown when making your claim).
You’re ready to claim
You do not need to call DWP to arrange an appointment and you don’t need to attend the jobcentre.
If you are making a new claim for Universal Credit, you no longer need to call DWP as part of the process. Instead, someone from DWP will call you back if they need to check any of the information provided as part of the claim.
